The sacredness? According to Stuart Kauffman is the other face of the science fiction

An eccentric title for a book even more weird, but worth suggesting it as summer reading for some commitment. This is Reinventing the Sacred. A New View of Science, Reason, and Religion , Stuart Alan Kauffman, and in the Italian version by Mario Rasetti, just exit code editions, Reinventing the Sacred. A new vision of science, reason and religion . But for those who had desire and time, the advice is to read in the original edition, in paperback for a very short (320 page., $ 16.95). It is not always encounter a world-renowned scientist who can also present a write-bodied, exuberant, in a word "complex" as it is right to expect from one of the recognized masters of complexity. Because this is Stuart Kauffman, founder and director of the Institute for Biocomplexity and Informatics, professor emeritus of biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania, then to the Santa Fe Institute and currently at Tampere University of Technology, Finland.

Among the leading scholars of the origin of life, Kauffman is the author of famous books, such as at home in the universe Exploration and evolutionary . But this effort differs from its recent past, because it is basic to a head node of our present. They are matters of urgency, if not dramatic. Humanity has a future? Or his own intelligence technology will end with the self-extinction? Why is it necessary to rethink the associative life moving from an apparently unscientific so what is the sacred? And that means today to "sacred"?

These are questions that are shaking the wrists. Meanwhile, a petition reinventing the sacred is in itself a contradiction, seemingly sacrilegious. If God exists and if the world is an expression of its laws, then the sacred is not the subject of invention. But this contradiction is diluted in the light of recent history.

Religion and beliefs often produce conflicting views, but once they were separated by political boundaries, geographical, historical and cultural. Today, however, suffer a mutual collapse because of the irreversible process of globalization. The two cultures par excellence, science and faith can no longer afford to act as the blocks in the Cold War, a antithetical to the other, mutual, suspicious, bitter war of position.

If this state of affairs will last, the systemic collapse can not be avoided. From eminent biologist, Kauffman points out that the process of life is characterized dall'autoestinzione much as evolution. We are not so protected by virtue of some obscure privilege. The thousand daily large-scale catastrophic events, predation caused by the attitude of political and economic aggregates, only the alarm bells of a cataclysm of unimaginable proportions. A signal could be the growing success of that imaginary doubt catastrophic that captures the collective unconscious.

must therefore start from new bases. How? For Kauffman central notion is the sacredness of life. But what is the "life"? From the point of view of science's most advanced all living things have in common the fact that they are "autocatalytic entities". The term derives dall'autopoiesi of Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela, but if Kauffman is a philosopher, he is also chief scientist. His major contribution to biology is precisely in having demonstrated a basic property of living beings: life is not following algorithmic processes, that is to say, unpredictable and, above all, open. The stunning variety of life forms on our planet is just the infinitesimal portion of the development potential. None of them can be included in a hypothetical record of platonic forms.

The second basic principle is the co-evolution. There are no separate or isolated systems. On the contrary, all the transformations are played on the ground of mutual interaction. Third and even more powerful concept: the institutions and events that occur at a certain scale of the universe are governed by autonomous statutes, not inconsistent with the laws of physics, but not reducible to physical laws. This means rejecting reductionism and embrace the thought, "holistic". With the difference, compared to well-known advisers new age style to Fritjof Capra, that the scientific foundations of Kauffman are now very solid and incontrovertible.

In other words, the molecular organization, the emergence of life, the emergence of autonomous agents, the biosphere and man again, with all its history that has produced meanings, values, cultures and economic structures, entities are not reducible to simpler species that compose them, but instead are "agencies", with internal consistency.

All this apparatus of dizzying concepts seems far away by the urgency of re-foundation of the sacred, but it is not. This is shown by the splendid chapter on the path of morality. Also - says Kauffman - evolves with the passage of history, through resolutions of the emergence of innovative and unpredictable, which follow a mathematical law called "global Pareto Optimality", ie the 'global Pareto efficiency. "

the remote root, there are studies on income distribution of the famous economist Vilfredo Pareto. But it is quite unusual the fact that this mathematical analysis can be also applicable to the issue of appreciation of the different moral values in a concrete space of ethical choices. Therefore, the values evolve no less than the civilization which, however, means that evolution in the strict sense is not the enemy of morality, but rather one of its bases.

Even moving from very different scientific settings, there is a striking convergence. For example, the anthropologist Joseph A. Bulbul, a professor at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and one of the greatest scholars of the evolution of religion, argues that religious according to a precise adaptive design. The religious knowledge (and the sense of the sacred), even apart from the specific ideas, would be instrumental to the survival of the community. If you examine the various religious systems using the mathematical tools of game theory one discovers that they, surprisingly, always have a high adaptive value. The moral doctrines are therefore intrinsically linked to the survival of communities, even if you adopt a frame of reference neoevoluzionista!

In today's world, however, this consideration results in an extreme case, globalized the so-called "prisoner's dilemma." Kauffman warns the collapse and confusion of the various civilizations that goes by the name of "globalization" is not synonymous with global civilization. What is needed to create it?

We lack a global ethic. Moreover, even in Italy, the theologian Vito Mancuso, attentive to the voices that come from the world of science, warns that there is a deep need to return to the sacred dimension of politics, within a framework that provides for the negotiation of all instances .

But to open the breach was in fact the fantasy literature, and more than a century ago. That mankind must find a synthesis of all its cultural and ethical reasons, it became clear from the first steps of this irreversible process called "globalization." The differences, while necessary, languages, customs, traditions, will one day find a higher synthesis. Various were the narrative devices to justify it. Herbert George Wells, in the novel In the Days of the Comet (1906), envisioned a global cataclysm which would have arisen had the miraculous gift of a mysterious gas, which can act on all living things, directing them towards the common good: "The great awakening derived directly from the processing - Wells wrote - the last, the deepest, most extended, the most durable of all the great waves of religious feeling and to whom you give this name. " Well in advance of the concepts of Kauffman is this combination of a higher morality and the new perception of the sacredness of life.

Meanwhile Isaac Asimov proposed the political unity, economic and moral of the planet by means of a future physical and social engineering. Then, in the saga of Star Trek the unity of the Earth, placed in a planetary federation, is founded on an underlying concept of mutual acceptance of differences, in turn, by the exceeding of the struggle for survival. To obtain this necessary revolution without bloodshed must sit back and listen - Kauffman says - we need to refound the Eden, and need to rediscover a sense of reverence that puts the miracle of life. You get the same message in Avatar a pity it was wasted in a disappointing film.

Remote Start Vw Manual

wins the challenge hegemony - is one year old magazine IF

making in these days a full year after the magazine "IF", the unusual and the fantastic quarterly published by Gruppo Editoriale Tabula Fati. It is a remarkable achievement, considering that in Italy there was a high-profile magazine entirely dedicated to that fatal and fascinating universe of extraordinary tale that struggles to be encapsulated in a genre. Who owns a minimum of historical memory will recall that this lush land of creativity in our country has for decades been treacherously surrounded by desert. This was also the effect of the old hegemony. The criticism that occupied the upper floors of the daily newspapers and weekly, and tolerate little bad science fiction and fantasy in general. Therefore, the above statement was traveling in the underground, assigned to publications almost always ephemeral, a void that was felt, because it contradicted the extraordinary attention of readers to a form of expression as the son of a lesser god. Yet the Great
obtained and obtains broad support. The numbers speak for themselves: Italy has long been a thriving publishing market, which offers news, reprints, unpublished, and a parterre of respect for indigenous talent. This whole universe is particularly receptive, however, does not fear contamination with enviable open and accepting contributions from countries culturally distant from the 'primary' U.S., around which orbited the general public has for decades.
However, it is also known that the culture of academic records behind what is taken for granted elsewhere. With the exception of some pioneering work of scholars, for the rest of the fantastic stretched until not long ago the shadow of suspicion. Was trading for evasion evasiveness, or more was accepted willingly the sociological version of science fiction, generously supported by Carlo Fruttero and Franco Lucentini direction when they were twenty-five years of the series "Urania" of Mondadori, because in line with the Freudian reality principle that informed the ' cultural elite of the time.
But nothing comes from nothing. So even "IF", which stems from ancient passions and consolidated assets. In the editorial to the first issue the director Carlo Bordoni, known sociologist of literature, writer and critic, and for many years director of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Carrara, declared without hesitation that "IF" you refers to the tradition of American pulp magazines of the early '50s "if Worlds of Science Fiction" (and do not forget that the first "if" was merged with the legendary "Galaxy"). The same Bordoni then debuted in the Italian edition, published by the Tribune of Piacenza, in the distant 1964. Can not say nothing to outsiders, but fans know that The Tribune was formed around a handful of well-trained scholars, and that the same publishing house, La Bussola in the series, published almost always preview the translations of works by Ray Bradbury Jack Vance, Muriel Box, Pat Frank, Raymond F. Jones, L. Chaterine Moore, Philip K. Dick and Theodore Sturgeon, to name a few. To say nothing of the cover page of Herbert H. Pagani - also known as the late singer and songwriter - or Ernesto Teale, empyrean revenue of no less graphic authorship of the famous illustrations by Karel Thole for
a legacy of style that is known very well in setting the graphic novel "IF".
These roots also explain the presence among the staff of Romulus Runcini, dean and chief expert of Italian literature of the fantastic. So "IF" is a 'network' - as they say today - starting from the publisher Marco Solfanelli, already one of the architects in the early '80s the Award has always been passionate supporter and Tolkien Authors borderline, as demonstrated by his extensive catalog. And now that numbers have come out of four is already possible to take stock.
hundred twenty pages for each number, from the simple but elegant graphics, edited by Piero Orsi, "IF" presents a kind of coma "MicroMega" of studies on narrative across the border, where the border is defined as those for common sense, and the chronicle of 'ordinary. The scope
preferred by the authors of "IF" (equally distributed among the essayists of various fields and backgrounds, but all very competent, and storytellers, almost always experienced) is rather precisely the extraordinary, the ' unusual exceptional, in a word fantastic, as we will Tzvetan Todorov in his seminal research by Theories of the symbol to The fantastic literature (1970), where, however, as we know, the great scholar says that the sense of the fantastic dall'esitazione born player in front of a text that is neither 'poetic' or 'allegorical', because it is rather "a kind ... always evanescent," characterized by indecision just conscious: in short, a black mirror of the present.
This explicit approach has allowed us to organize any number of "IF" following a thematic node, without betraying the spirit of interdisciplinary and so to speak of confusion that comes from immersion in surreality. For now came the monographs on Robots & Androids, Underworld, Ucronia, Yellow & Noir and expects the upcoming vampire and C, and the next one, dedicated to 'Altrimondi'.
Above all, however, intrigued by the express unconditional openness to the universe of possibilities, and in fact this puts "IF" arguably the forefront in Italy, but also in keeping with the best that is developing in culture (also Scientific) in this first taste of international millennium and on which we will return elsewhere. The
asserts among other well-known writer and critic Gianfranco de Turris in the excellent essay entitled Ucronia or absolute revisionism, which opens the third issue devoted precisely to the 'ucronia, "a term coined by as you know French philosopher Charles Renouvier to indicate a time that does not exist but which nonetheless might be, or whose existence and hypothetical could be placed at a point in the past where you open up alternative routes, that parallel dimensions. In other words, infinite planes of existence. It's a thought that gives the giddiness, a concept at the Fredrick Brown Preposterous Universe , to name a classic, but it is also an approach that - writes de Turris - implies "... the re-interpretation of past history on the basis not only to new purchases (documents, testimonies), but to new perspectives and points of view previously banned "in this way by launching a free rein to think or imagine the historical time which will help to change" ... the mentality of the people against the fait accompli that takes the form of a psychological attitude against the widespread ' granite immutability of the Royal past, present and future. "
It's enough to make up the points of a manifesto, because the value of Fantastic is all in inducing the opening, the alternative, to the thousands of millions of possible futures. We live in a universe 'is not ergodic', the scientists say the most advanced of our time, namely in a world of endless possibilities. You just have the courage to explore them. Welcome, then a magazine that promotes this kind of mindset.

List Of Symptoms Of The Black Death

Who rules the web? None! The web is self-regulating and self-governing. Thus the gurus were expressed at the beginning of the impending revolution communicational network. This patent absurdity, constantly contradicted by the facts, circulated at that time if it were the revealed word, and still circulates, and indeed it is revived by influential political leaders as a dogma that does not allow objections.
To discuss this is the decision of the Court in Milan has convicted three managers of Mountain View, California, for allowing the publication on YouTube, albeit for a few hours of a video that took up a disabled child beaten and abused by other boys . The protest Google owns YouTube, it was not long in coming. So far nothing strange, because the fortunes of the wealthiest and most powerful company in the virtual world are closely tied to the rules of finance.
The theorem is simple: if the information is money, and if it is true that the free movement of financial capital guarantee economic growth, then the information is completely circular - whatever the cost - as freely as possible. Ideally, in fact it circulated without limitation, regardless of content. In this logic, any obstacle to the vital flow of blood-money information should be considered as a dangerous angioma, to be removed promptly with an angioplasty, or even resorting to the scalpel.
But there is a problem. Two, in fact. First of all content. Unlike cash, they are never neutrals. If it is true, following the apophthegm attributed to Vespasian, who pecunia non olet, in short, that money does not stink, so is not of any Content posted on the web, and even less of what motivated the court's ruling in Turin and that set off a maelstrom of a global internett.
Also, you can endlessly debate the legality of the methods and objectives of a company, but to defend that company, or rather that business model, reduction in authoritative representatives of the political field belonging to the same country where the establishment of the center of gravity of that company, and if you rely on this defense no less than the inviolable rights democracy, then the scenario changes completely. The official statement of the American embassy in Rome that responds to the decision of the judges in Turin by invoking "the fundamental principle of freedom of the Internet, vital for democracies" immediately becomes a trivial episode from criminal connotations - the legal responsibility of having imposed on media coverage a disgusting gesture - in a political interest, indeed global.
And here the first contradiction: how can a sovereign claim to legislate on such a sensitive matter in behalf of all other sovereign states? Such a clear stance is democratic or autocratic? And then, is meant by "democracy"? All in the name of democracy should be allowed? In the name of democracy no court or law should put his hand to what circulates on the net?
The paradox is magnified if they are to be called into question the democratic institutions of states as the great American moralizing. With China, for example, it is easy to adopt two weights and two measures: first words of condemnation expressed by the Chinese censorship Hilary Clinton, the other to accept tight regulation by Google and other search engines U.S. willing to do anything to win the largest virtual marketplace that exists today. But in the case of democratic countries the two weights and two measures do not work. And here is the need to invoke the principles are so general and abstract to generate the absurd belief that the judges in Turin have been the architects of a real ostracism, expulsion from a highly political content.
But the judges are really just limited to ostracize a particular content offensive and disgusting, if not morally dangerous. Big companies like Google can safely withstand the expulsion or omission of any piece of information, and in fact I gladly accept this logic, if just for the tax to be huge potential markets such as China. But if the penalty involves the direct managers of the company, here you open the vexed question of the injured democratic content.
In conclusion, the web breaks down the subtle but important barrier that runs between the imagination and action. Everyone knows that. So, between saying and doing the elusive virtual universe not only puts half of the sea, but not standing in the way even a hair. And so we find ourselves confronted with an insoluble dilemma: to ensure the free expression of all allow free expression to all. You pass by a short abstract right, recognized erga omnes according to their moral status, a license is granted to sovereign personam, which, however, all the emissaries, without distinction, are in theory free the owners. There is no reason to envy the poor legislator dealing with a matter so elusive.

The myth of the economy "according to Serge Latouche

Taken literally, the message the French philosopher and economist Serge Latouche eschatological flavor takes on an unusual, a harbinger of the end of time that sometimes touches the tone of millenarian preaching. Why in the book The Invention of the economy, just in bookstores for Bollati Boringhieri in excellent translation by Fabrizio Grillenzoni abound apocalyptic phrases such as: "This economy is totalitarianism that leads, in time of death ' economy, and perhaps humanity itself. The absurdity a life where the economy is both the means and the end is unmasked, and this exposes the emptiness is important in life. You might as well commit suicide and end it now. " Really left. Or we read: "The sun of modernity and the economy has reached its west, the place of its setting." Announcement almost Spengler. But again: "The monetization of everything and everything to which we are witnessing the collapse of the causes of meanings." Enigmatic.
Moreover, Latouche is known for his contrarian view, expressed for example in the development How to Survive (2005), in the mega (1995) or in Short treatise on the decline serene (2008), but in the economy The invention, apart from the provocations mentioned above, it will unnecessarily catastrophic money now so easily expendable in the era of global economic crisis. In the preface to the French edition appeared in 2005, Latouche recalled that the genesis of this book sinks into the distant past and do not suspect, when the dominant myth was that unlimited expansion. At the time of economic interpretations flourished
promising dizzying, relentless progressive increments. Great figures of science, as the biophysicist Stuart Kauffman, reason about the "adjacent possible", that economy would translate into increasing levels of complexity, and wealth. The massmediology Derrick de Kerckhove, a student of Marshall McLuhan and prosecutor, illustrated charts that connected the growing rate accelerated economic and financial information and presenting amazing future contingencies. And ultimately the unfortunate theorem Francis Fukuyama, the "end of history" was holding the view of the expansion unlimited global market.
Today, however, even supporters admit unlimited number of uncertainties in development, publishing industry adapts to you. Thus, For example, the Italian edition of the latest book by Niall Ferguson (avid supporter of the evolutionary model in economics) is titled The Rise and Fall of money, while the same in the original text was presented without uncertainty with a triumphalist The Ascent of Money .
But why consider economics an "invention"? Free trade, money, lending at interest and the concept of goods would then be comparable to the discoveries and applications of the steam or electricity? You can rethink the story in the absence of production and financial systems? It is conceivable without the word homo economicus? If the economy really is cursed invention, generating utilitarian obsessions bottomless and pointless, it is fair to hope for a society free of economic laws now known and accepted? Do not you touch perhaps the dream of anarchists? Above all, it is unrealistic to imagine a world without money, yet overflowing with goods and services?
poets, writers, we have tried. Ezra Pound, in his economic writings, denounced the hallucination, mania fixed idea of the market, as we know. The science fiction writer Herbert George Wells, in men as Gods, for his part described the civilization without money or goods of the Utopians, the people of a fictional parallel universe. From these roots thousands of imitators.
Latouche apparently does not go that far, or rather you do not declare. Certainly, in The Invention of the economy there is a strict historical-critical analysis that moves from a distance dall'Aristotele Nicomachean Ethics to the Augustinian and Jansenist surprising roots of capitalism, through the invention of the lexical term "economy" , for the founding ideology work, for the construction of a "social physics" to the inevitable destruction of the concept of communitas to the relentless pressure of the capital accounting year. The metaphysical ancestry - studied with insight into more than two-thirds of this difficult text - certainly frightened, but because you can talk to a real "religion of the economy", and its special "dogmatic."
The touchstone could only be the work of Adam Smith, perhaps the most challenging chapter of the book. With the mediation of thought and criticism of Depuy, Latouche review the fundamental motive, the primary impulse - if you will - behind every capitalist accumulation. Smith was the author of the rage of the Wealth of Nations , and is even today for any economist. And here arise, quite unexpectedly, the comparison with René Girard, The great anthropologist and philosopher, theorist of the scapegoat mechanism and persecution of mimetic rivalry. At the bottom of the economic process may in fact hide the desire for approval from others, borrowed from the possession and ostentation: and in cross-cultural form of collective narcissism, which results in the establishment of a genuine myth. The economic myth, to be precise.
If not that, as we know, the break in Girard indifferentiation original results in the performance generally of mimetic violence, and finally the description of the sacrificial victim, the scapegoat. Apparently the economic myth would turn the state of violence latent in every social organization in peace you need to trade. But on closer inspection the scapegoat is always there: in nature and dominated raped, dispossessed and exploited masses, the frequent economic and financial crises, wars, or the pretext of legal equality and marketable.
course, mimetic desire can go opposite ways. On one hand it can turn the interior, and practice the care of the soul and wisdom. Secondly, it may well be realized in the acquisition of wealth.
In the end, both paths are forms of "speculation," the ego of relationship with the Others. Only this perennially Alice in front of the mirror may tend is external, then the property, the pomp and all that money can buy, including anime, and the acquisition of knowledge and virtue, through the acquisition of the tools of knowledge. Both, however, in hindsight, experience deeply Faustian, and unhappy, because both standardized progressive accumulation, both united by the need to transform a vital process in the abstract capital. All in all, a book that leaves little slits.

Roberto Saviano: the art of telling hatred and love

Before the interview to Panorama where Roberto Saviano reveals its surprising readings, the Neapolitan writer was appointed an honorary member of the Academy of Brera ... and returned with the memory of that day that you realize what Saviano is not a fake character but a real person. A ceremony almost "free", as befits the style of the artists little pompous. But what is striking is the relationship established between the writer and the audience: breriani students, children and young people, called in a flash from the deadly tam tam, sms, email, Facebook, Twitter. All
listening attentively, in silence, most challenging more than two hours spent standing, packed like sardines.
striking and suggests that his great ability to listen, really rare in a landscape media crowded with characters who talk about him, engaged in the systematic disruption, insult or aggression as discounted artificial dialogue. A lesson in composure that moves even more because the actors are virtually no children or grandchildren of the generations that now occupy the public space of the word. They are young people without "say", to be precise, but they know that taking it by force if necessary.
however, overlooked, or rather, in their midst, this time there was a particular person: such as clothing, similar gestures, the look identical, indistinguishable from the movements. It could be him, Saviano, a student among students, and also a student or a student could find his place in an exchange of shares that is fascinating and a little 'uneasy.
Talk of the Camorra, Saviano, after the ritual of thanks. His audience of almost the same age makes him a mirror. Among them, familiarly known as the "Robert", as if to emphasize that there is a distance, as if to emphasize a similarity not only age but also situational.
really affects the way in which Saviano speaks to the crowds. It does so with immediate language, almost harsh, but the people who work there understand that behind care and study. It makes use of technical aids are sophisticated but not extraordinary, the common heritage of children of all latitude and condition. From his laptop, connected to the projector, slide sites and images. Talk of the Camorra, Saviano, and talks about his varied and unique life experiences, worn when he was still younger than the average of those who now listen, but while the left hand holding the microphone, the right moves agile, top and forward, miming the typical gestures of rappers. And the rap, at one point in the conversation, or rather narrative, really check. A simple connection to YouTube and here is the music of a lively syncopated rap napoletano. Sing the killings daily, dealing, the squalor of the suburbs, the lives of many, too many, which is still loved and lost life.
Music and words have described all of this nameless horror of the first two years of major investigations - said Saviano -. Music and words told more than many large books of sociology. Just listen - Saviano says - it was all there. It translates
, Saviano. Translates to a vernacular that can not be called even "Neapolitan" because language is a hybrid contract. Lingua franca of the Slums . Some students from the rasta look, and listen to mention dancing, watching with eyes, but also look with your ears, and meet with the body.
Modula emphasis, Saviano, passing with great skill dall'asettico Italian dialect. The deflection, dropped to art, color of the membership in its history. Belonging among many others, all with equally worthy.
Charm, Saviano, when it reveals the true meaning of words, almost always violent, more extreme. You know that means "chain ends c'a 'n face"? I saw him - he says Saviano - because when you kill one, and this falls face down the gold chain jumps and square face, and sticks there like glue from the dead. And then of death in those places you have a totally different concept - says Saviano - is involved in the death. Everyone in the neighborhood know when a "must" die. Becomes a collective, almost social.
And then there's the taste of death - Saviano says - so much so that I at some point I should go see for yourself. Always. To understand, to realize the reality. When one is shot in the stomach, for example, feel the smell of what you have eaten, but it scares you.
There's even a "sentimental education" that comes from violence and extreme conditions - Saviano says - because in reality these feelings are strong, they are true. Friendship, love, membership is not a game, even if they can play you in a moment of life. We then explain the penetrative power of neomelodici, circumventing the official market and capturing an incredible success, snubbed by critics and intellectuals - says Saviano - who actually belongs to this caste, and as many more others.
So love and death, and then violence, courage, fear, brutality, passion: these are the ingredients. Ancient as the world. But always new, just like the world is reborn to life, behind the eyes and behind the thoughts of young people. Provided, however, tell them you know, provided you use the right language, than ever nowadays must be a highly emotional language. Saviano, a siren that fascinates and moves, as the ancient storytellers. Saviano an orator, as would have been qualified long ago, before the word took on a negative meaning, no one knows why. Today he describes himself as "writer." But before that, it's able to tell very bad things but also beautiful, as are all true stories, places him in a position carelessly left unguarded by the many directors of the masses that crowd the evening of boredom and squares television transmissions. If you will hold the inner tension, this sapling of a new rhetoric in the future in store for many many surprises.
